ah, google ads at work! or did you know that devin is a stuttering republican?
i received devin's post, "free speech," in my gmail inbox. as we all know, google adds a bunch of paid links that are supposed to be related to whatever your email is. pretty genius. if googles analysis (displayed on the left) of devin is correct, i must have grossly misjudged devin...

Free Speech
Yes, we live in America where we have the freedom of speech! Yay! It's a privilege that I know we all enjoy, even if we sometimes take it for granted. But lately I've noticed something troubling. A new trend with conservatives, republicants, and jesus-freaks who have found a new way to play the victim - by claiming that their freedom of speech is being "threatened" because other people are holding them accountable for their words! Can you imagine that? Yes, we do have the freedom of speech, but with it comes the responsibility of standing behind the words that come out of your mouth and dealing with the repercussions. It would be best if people could learn how to do this constructively and maturely, but it seems that for many neo-cons, they can dish it out but they can't take it.
Take Sarah Palin, complaining about the treatment she receieved from the media and most Americans in general during her vice-presidential campaign. I've heard her complaints against Katie Couric, Tina Fey, and the "liberal elite" media in general. Wanna know why the media seems biased? Because people in the media are educated, have done a lot of reading, are familiar with current events, and are able to process information. Therefore, they tend to be a little more progressive. They don't think it's funny when a vice-presidential candidate can't name what publications she reads on a regular basis - it's more like insulting. Sarah Palin has a right to say whatever she wants, but the press has the right to report on it. If you don't like the way you look in a mirror, don't blame the mirror.
Then there are the Prop 8 supporters who are alleging that they are being "discriminated" against because their donations to remove the fundamental right to marry from same-sex couples are public information. As a result, many fair-minded Californians have chosen to either boycott or condemn some of these folks. Mean? Maybe. Unfair? Not at all. You gave money to crush people's dreams and negatively impact the lives of millions of families. Deal with your actions. Deal with the hurt you have caused people, think of the children's lives you are affecting, the parents like mine who have to live with other people deciding to demonize and restrict the fate of their families' futures!
Religious people who claim they are being persecuted for their faith in the United States are about as valid as models complaining that they are being objectified. You chose the religious lifestyle, you chose to act self-righteous and morally superior and you love it, and you love to make other people feel like they are not as good as you because they chose not to believe in a supernatural power who supposedly spoke through humans thousands of years ago to write a book that pretty much condemns every person on this planet depending on how you interpret it. And yet we let you do that, we let you go to your churches and listen to your preachers and you don't have to hide it and you are free to talk about it whenever you want. You even got "in god we trust" branded onto our money, whether I trust in god or not. So don't complain to me that you are being discriminated against or that your free speech is being threatened. You can say whatever the F$&@ you want, it doesn't mean I have to listen, and if I do listen I have every right to tell you just what I think of your opinion. So deal with it.

What Can I Say About Lindsay Lohan (That Hasn't Been Said Before)?
What is it about Lindsay Lohan that makes me love/hate her so much?
I just had a dream about her the night before last, and much like many similar dreams I've had about her, we were just friends hanging out, and I kept thinking "OMG I can't believe I am friends and hanging out with Lindsay Lohan... she sure seems different from how the tabloids portray her." I always find it odd and complicated how one can maintain an inner dialogue even within a dream... how does that even work? I remember thinking that I wanted to ask her about her drugs and sexcapades but worrying that I might offend her. Then, thinking that maybe all those tabloid stories were blantant lies. Either way, in the dream, she was calm and collected. I guess that's the way I like to pretend that Lindsay really is. Just a calm, innocent yet fiesty red head who would befriend me if she ever got the chance.
Here's where it gets embarrassing. I do actually really love Lindsay Lohan. I own both of her albums and have even been known to peruse YouTube to watch "live" clips of her "performing" her "music". I only use the "quotes" to be kind of funny, because really, to me it's no laughing matter. I also downloaded her new single "Bossy" from iTunes three times (the third time was an accident) and I'm hotly anticipating her new album out this fall.
Yet everytime I think about it, I kind of feel ashamed. She's not really a musician, and as a musician myself, I hate that the mainstream charts are full of teenage boys and girls with pretty faces who have been auto-tuned and studio-musician-enhanced all to hell. I loathe Britney Spears with a passion most people reserve for the likes of Hitler. I don't even consider Paris worthy of mention (although I just did) and I've finally weened myself from ever checking the gossip blogs. Yet something about Lindsay... I just don't know what it is, but something draws me to her. I guess that's what makes any superstar so powerful - despite everything horrible we know about them, we're able to dismiss their flaws and admire them for the blank spaces that we individually fill with whatever it is we think we want to see.

Tall Buildings
I went to see the Jones Street Boys perform at Used Housing Works on Thursday. I hadn't heard them before but it was free and I had had some beers and at that point could've been lead straight to hell happily with the promise of "free." But enough about me, they ended with this song (a John Hartford cover that I also had never heard before) that I liked. Enjoy.
Also, in other news. Buy a Mac for college and get a free iPod (touch or nano). You can just say you're going to school. They don't check.

Too many Weddings
I haven't had a weekend in New York since May. I'm probably missing out on a shit ton of free concerts. I've been invited to shows almost every weekend, but haven't been able to go due to weddings. The weddings have been cool but you know... summer in the city is fucking great on the weekends and I hate missing it. So far I have misssed: M.I.A., Holy Fuck, Vampire Weekend, The Hold Steady... this list is going to be too long if I keep going.
My new music... I'm all about the New Nine Inch Nails (The Slip), Ladytron (Velocifero), and on a lighter note Lykke Li (Youth Novels). This will be my summer album. She's got that amateur pop princess thing going on. Not like Lily Allen pop, but more like a mix between Feist and Gwen Stefani. Check out her video for Little Bit.

Hello
Way to take initiative Dennis, consider this: * to be a gold star, you could even call it the gold star of freedom in achievement if you want to, cause it's yours now.
I have been listening to the band Does it offend you, yeah a bit lately as well as Wilco's Sky Blue Sky. I've also been attempting to get more into the new release from the Dandy Warhols "Earth to the Dandy Warhols", it's taking some time but I'm confident that I'll find a center in it.
I'm currently reading "The World Without Us", and I'm about to start "The Lying Days" by Nadine Gortimer for my book club. If anyone is in LA and wants to join a fun exciting book club let me know...
Also for those in the Los Angeles area, I've been enjoying hitting the Vineland Drive-in in Baldwin park. Excellent projectors and screens and all the fun you can have in a car! It's also a swap meet, learn more here.

i was listening to the ipod the other day and realized that i am getting a bit tired of the music that keeps singing in my ears, but i didnt really know what to do about it. i plan on tapping into each of my friends and exploiting your palettes as to ascertain the next song on my ipod. and while i am at it, i wouldnt mind knowing what you are reading, looking at, thinking about, where you think the good fishing holes are, where you are traveling and on and on ad infinitum.
hopefully, by inviting a large number of people to this blog, it will live with minimal participation by any one individual.
no limitations of what you can post. if'ns you dont want to talk about music and instead you want to rant about that milkshake in your hand, then do it.
also, if there is someone you think is worthwhile to invite to this lil crock pot, let me know and i will add him/her
so.
let's get this bitch started
